Conference "The Role of Cultural Heritage in Socio-Economic Development and Preservation of Democratic Values – HERItage”

Within Croatia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, the University of Rijeka in cooperation with the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education is organizing the conference entitled "The Role of Cultural Heritage in Socio-Economic Development and Preservation of Democratic Values - HERItage", which is set to take place on 11-13 March 2020 in Opatija.  

The HERItage is the first conference in the field of research to be held under  Croatia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Conference will gather researchers, representatives from the ministries and agencies as well as students from the field of social sciences and humanities.

The main topics of this conference are: role of universities in promoting and preserving cultural heritage; role of scientific research in strengthening the preservation of industrial heritage; challenges and opportunities of digital transformation: the role of digital tools in preserving and developing cultural heritage; other important aspects regarding social sciences and humanities in today’s Europe and within the new framework programme Horizon Europe, especially on the topic of cultural heritage.  

Along with the main topic of the conference, two cross-cutting issues will also be discussed - Public policies: cultural heritage and democratic values and Co-operation and innovation: cultural heritage and social transformation.  

The HERItage will also be part of the activities organized by the European Capital of Culture 2020 project.

Due to this, the conference participants will have the opportunity to visit cultural heritage locations related to this project.   The list of keynote speakers so far include: Étienne Balibar (Université de Paris X, Nanterre; University of California, Irvine; Kingston University; Columbia University) and Danica Kragić Jensfelt (Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, Stockholm).

The conference is financed within Horizon 2020 Work programme 2018-2020 Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies.
